Author profile: (Oscar Fingall O'Flahertie Wills Wilde). Oscar Wild was an Irish author, born in Dublin in1854 as the son of an eminent surgeon.

He studied at Trinity College, Dublin, and at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he distinguished himself for his eccentricity in dress, tastes, and manners.

His first published work, Poems (1881), was well received. In 1884 he married Constance Lloyd, and they had two sons, Cyril and Vivian.

Later he began writing for some periodicals, but his active literary career began with the publication of Lord Arthur Savile's Crime and Other Stories (1891) and two collections of fairy tales, The Happy Prince (1888) and The House of Pomegranates (1892). In 1891 his famous novel Picture of Dorian Gray appeared.

Wilde's stories and essays were well received, but his creative genius found its highest expression in his plays-Lady Windermere's Fan (1892), A Woman of No Importance (1893), An Ideal Husband (1895), and his masterpiece, The Importance of Being Earnest (1895).

In the nineties, he was accused of homosexuality by the Marquis of Queensbury, father of Wilde's intimate, Lord Alfred Douglas. For this motive Wilde was sentenced to two years' hard labour.

Released in 1897, he lived in France until his death in 1900, plagued by ill health and bankruptcy.

The first scenes of the story take place in Lady Windermere's house, during the last reception before Easter. To the party it was present also a chiromantist, Mr. Podgers, who made curious lots of people included Lord Arthur, a young and rich man.

Mr. Podgers read Lord Arthur's hand and saw that he was going to kill a person. Lord Arthur, very shocked, decided to carry out his fate before the marriage with Sybil, his future wife.

He wrote down a list of all his friends and relatives and he chose Lady Clementina Beauchamp, a dear old lady who was his own second cousin on his mother's side.

He decided to use poison for his murder, because it was a safe, sure and quiet method and he gave her a pill of aconitine.

Unfortunately Lady Clementina died of natural death so Lord Arthur was obliged to choose another person to kill: his uncle, the Dean of Chichester, a collector of clocks. He presented him an explosive one, but also this murder failed. After this second failure Lord Arthur decided not to try again to kill anyone.

One night, walking on Thames he met Mr. Podgers and decided to kill the same chiromantist; so he threw him into the river.

The story ends with the marriage with his dear fiancée Sybil.
