Allen Ginsberg

He was born in 1926 in Newark , New Jersey. Ginsberg published his poems, taught in the high school and was a moderate socialist. His wife, Naomi, was a radical communist and a nudist that went tragically crazy when she was young. Ginsberg discovered the poetry of Walt Whitman in the high school but despite of his interest for the poetry, he followed his father's advises and studied to become lawyer. These were his intentions when he began the first year in the Columbia University of New York, but it was only in the university that got in touch with a group of troubled and wild souls where there was also Jack Kerouac and other friends like William S. Burroughs and Neal Cassady that weren't students. These young 'criminals' philosophers were obsessed by the drugs, crime, sex and literature. Ginsberg was the youngest and the less involved in the group and helped them to develop and cultivate their literary skills. Their reference was the Columbia University but this didn't encourage them to study with profit and interest. Ginsberg was also suspended from the university. He began to come into contact with the variegated mankind that used to frequent Times Square in New York, mainldy composed by abandoned and thievish people. He began to experiment the benzedrine and the marijuana, and to frequent bars for homosexuals in Greenwich Village. Doing this he was convinced to commence having great poetic visions together with his friends, visions that he and Kerouac called 'New visions'.

He went to Denver and San Francisco to meet Cassady and to stimulate the crossing of the United States that then would have inspired the adventures of Jack Kerouac in 'On the road'.

Reading William Blake in an apartment of Harlem in a summer day in 1948, Allen Ginsberg had an awful and crazy vision in which Blake appeared to him. This was the great moment of his life in which Ginsberg had joyfully finally found God.

At the age of twenty-nine, Ginsberg wrote many poems that he hadn't published yet. He was the first Beat Writer to gain a notable success in the legendary 'Six Gallery poetry reading' with his new poem- Howl- in October 1955.

His fame continued to grow to the equal of the Beat movement that in the meantime was evolving from idea to reality.

At the beginning of the Sixties, Ginsberg stormed in the hippie scenario.

He work together with Timothy Leary to publicize the new discovery of Leary: the psychedelic drug called LSD. In 1970 Ginsberg met the controversial Tibetan guru Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, that he immediately chose like personal guru.

The death of Ginsberg on the 5^th of April in 1997 has deprived us of a character that practice a deep influence on the culture and American against-culture of the years Sixty and Seventy. Deprive us of his poetry, that is able to speak with a voice so strong that the talent of this beat, vagabond and controversial, it could not be denied. Ginsberg has died in the 5 April 1997 in the East Village of New York City for an heart attack and for cancer that afflicted him.
